Public Speaking With a Well Written Speech

A compelling public speech (political or non-political) can make a great difference for the speaker and for the success of the campaign. Speech is a powerful tool for connecting with the audience, educating in the process of presenting the subject, and inspiring action-taking. The key to an engaging, impactful speech is to address the audience’s interests and concerns in a relatable manner.

Speech Writing Service

Speech writer with speaker experience

Alongside being a public speaker, I have three decades of experience writing speeches, helping political candidates and nonprofits with writing and editing, all with a focus primarily on environmental, energy and social justice issues.

My speech-writing style is warm and direct, with a good counter-balance of humor and light-heartedness for technical (read “boring”) matters, and I am sensitive to the “real world” impact topics can have on human lives.

Drawing from my background

I have advanced degrees in biomedical engineering, 14 years experience as an enforcement officer/compliance inspector with the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, and experience as a teacher in the Grossmont Union High School District. I am thus proficient with scientific and technical material, rules, laws and regulations, and I write with cultural awareness in a manner that is easy to read.

Who I write for

In line with my experience and advocacy, I am particularly interested in working with organizations calling for diplomacy and peace (nonprofits and governmental organizations), social justice (such as Indigenous rights and refugee treatment), and environmental organizations (with the main topics of climate change, habitat loss, and species preservation). These issues are interrelated.

What to Expect Working Together

Initial consultation

We would require an initial consultation to go over the scope of the speech and to be “on the same page” regarding subject matter, length, and expectations of timely completion.

Clarity and details

I would ask that you be clear regarding the intent of your speech, the makeup of the audience, and that I be informed in a timely manner of specific material that you expect to be included, such as any particular case advocacy studies or trends of data that you wish to be highlighted. A back-and-forth process helps ensure that nothing important to you is omitted.

Lead Time

I ask for a lead time of one month in order to research, write, and have back-and-forth opportunities to adequately incorporate your concerns and refine the final document. If the speech is to be part of a PowerPoint presentation or something comparable that includes graphs and other visual information I may need more lead time.

Process

For most straightforward speeches not to exceed twenty minutes in delivery, a month should suffice for communicating while the document is prepared. Our first step would be to agree on an outline covering essential points. Following the outline, I would complete the first draft within the first week, and then send it to you for feedback. If I do not receive feedback by the end of the second week I will assume tacit acceptance of the document. I would then have the third week to make final modifications. My speech writing includes proofreading and editing documents at various stages of completion.

Delivery

I would transmit the finished product to you one week before the speech is to be given so that there is time to read, process and practice.
